Real Estate Educator & Industry Leader

Bartley Patterson is a REALTOR®, Managing Broker, real estate instructor, mentor and industry leader with more than 30 years of residential real estate experience in Michigan.

In addition to representing buyers and sellers, I have spent more than 15 years teaching real estate professionals, mentoring agents, providing broker-level transaction guidance and participating in REALTOR® association leadership.

My professional experience has included classroom instruction, contract and negotiation training, ethics education, association leadership, Professional Standards work and helping agents navigate difficult real estate transactions.

Real Estate Experience That Goes Beyond Selling Homes

Real estate experience is often measured by the number of transactions an agent closes.

Transactions matter, but my career has also given me another perspective: helping other real estate professionals improve their knowledge, solve problems and better represent their clients.

Practitioner + Managing Broker + Instructor + Mentor + Industry Leader

Those roles reinforce one another. The classroom creates opportunities to explain concepts. Brokerage leadership exposes me to complicated real-world situations. Working with clients keeps the practical side of real estate front and center.

More Than 15 Years Teaching Real Estate Professionals

I have been teaching real estate professionals for more than 15 years and have taught more than 60 classes covering professional development, representation, negotiation, ethics and real estate practice.

My teaching experience includes designation and certification coursework such as:

ABR®

Accredited Buyer's Representative education focused on professional buyer representation.

SRS

Seller Representative Specialist education focused on professional seller representation.

RENE®

Real Estate Negotiation Expert training focused on negotiation strategy and communication.

SRES®

Seniors Real Estate Specialist education focused on serving older adults and their families.

GREEN

Education involving energy efficiency, sustainability and green real estate features.

PSA

Pricing Strategy Advisor education focused on pricing and communicating property value.

I have also taught coursework involving HFR, GRI, CRETS and other professional real estate education programs.

In addition to designation and certification education, I teach Continuing Education and the REALTOR® Code of Ethics.

Teaching Real Estate Through Real Situations

My teaching style is based heavily on practical application.

Real estate professionals don't just need to know what a form says or what a rule requires. They need to understand how those concepts affect an actual buyer, seller or transaction.

My Teaching Philosophy

Explain the rule, explain the reason behind it, and then show how it applies when a real transaction becomes complicated.

That approach allows classroom discussions to include examples involving negotiations, inspections, appraisals, contracts, agency relationships, changing market conditions, technology and professional responsibility.

Managing Broker & Agent Mentor

Education doesn't stop when a class ends.

As a Managing Broker with RE/MAX Classic, I regularly help real estate professionals work through questions involving contracts, negotiations, inspections, appraisals, offer structure, difficult transaction situations and changing market conditions.

Sometimes the answer is straightforward.

Other times, the situation requires discussing several possible approaches, evaluating the risks and helping the agent determine the best path for their client.

Leadership Through the Eyes of Other Real Estate Professionals

Teaching and mentoring are ultimately measured by their impact on other people. Real estate professionals I have worked with describe their experiences turning to me for contract guidance, strategic advice, problem-solving, mentoring and support when transactions become complicated. Read their professional endorsements of my broker leadership and real estate experience .

Broker leadership often becomes most valuable when the transaction stops being routine.

That behind-the-scenes work provides exposure to a broad range of transaction situations and strengthens the practical perspective I bring to both clients and classroom instruction.

REALTOR® Association Leadership

Professional involvement has also been an important part of my real estate career.

Board of Directors

I served for more than nine years on the Board of Directors of my local REALTOR® association.

Association President

I served as President of the Board in 2013.

REALTOR® of the Year

I was recognized as REALTOR® of the Year in 2014.

Professional Standards & Ethics

One of the most important parts of REALTOR® professionalism is understanding the responsibilities agents have to their clients, customers and one another.

I have served on the Professional Standards Committee and have chaired hearings involving potential REALTOR® Code of Ethics violations.

That experience reinforces the importance of professional conduct, clear communication, proper representation and understanding the responsibilities that come with being a REALTOR®.

Real estate knowledge matters. How that knowledge is used—and the responsibility that comes with representing another person—matters just as much.

Helping Shape Forms, MLS & Professional Practice

My current REALTOR® association involvement also includes participation on the Forms Committee and the MLS Committee.

These committees provide another perspective on how real estate professionals use forms, data and technology in everyday practice.

Real estate continues to change—sometimes because of market conditions, sometimes because of technology, and sometimes because the rules and tools we use evolve.

Staying involved professionally helps me remain connected to those changes.

Continuing Professional Education

Teaching is only one side of professional development.

I also continue to learn.

Throughout my years in REALTOR® leadership, I attended numerous National Association of REALTORS® conventions and professional education events. I also attend our brokerage's national convention each year.

Real estate, technology and consumer expectations continue to evolve. Continuing education helps ensure that the advice I provide reflects the marketplace agents and consumers are actually working in today.

Professional Credentials Support the Education

I have earned 25 advanced real estate designations and certifications covering areas such as buyer representation, seller representation, negotiation, pricing strategy, residential real estate, senior clients, green real estate and technology.

Designations matter most when the education behind them improves the advice and representation a client receives.

Negotiation Experience & Education

Negotiation is one area where brokerage experience, professional education and practical transaction experience come together.

Buyers and sellers may face negotiations involving price, financing, inspections, appraisals, concessions, contingencies, occupancy and contract terms.

Seller Representation & Broker-Level Strategy

The same broker-level perspective also influences how I represent homeowners preparing to sell.

Pricing, preparation, marketing, offer evaluation, negotiation and contract-to-closing strategy all work together.
